Use with caution (may increase dizziness and lower blood pressure)
Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris (chest pain), chronic heart failure (stable), and to reduce risk of cardiovascular events as prescribed
Metoprolol is a cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic blocker. It reduces heart rate, cardiac output and renin release, thereby lowering blood pressure and decreasing the heart’s oxygen demand. The XL (extended-release) form provides controlled drug release over 24 hours.
Tablet for oral use. Take once daily at the same time each day, preferably with or immediately after food; swallow whole with water—do not crush or chew (extended-release). Dose and duration as prescribed; do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Dizziness, fatigue, slow heart rate (bradycardia), low blood pressure, headache, nausea, diarrhea/constipation, cold hands and feet, sleep disturbance
Do not stop abruptly (may worsen angina or trigger heart attack). Use with caution in asthma/COPD, diabetes (may mask hypoglycemia), thyroid disorders, peripheral vascular disease, kidney/liver impairment, and in patients with slow pulse, heart block, or acute decompensated heart failure. Monitor blood pressure and pulse regularly. Seek urgent care for very slow heartbeat, fainting, wheeze/shortness of breath, or swelling/rapid weight gain.
Other antihypertensives (additive hypotension), verapamil/diltiazem, digoxin (bradycardia/heart block), antiarrhythmics (e.g., amiodarone), clonidine (rebound hypertension on withdrawal), insulin/oral antidiabetics (masked hypoglycemia), NSAIDs (may reduce BP control), CYP2D6 inhibitors such as fluoxetine/paroxetine/quinidine (increase metoprolol levels)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
