Contains: Metoprolol succinate prolonged-release 50 mg
Metosux Xl 50 contains Metoprolol succinate prolonged-release 50 mg and is used for hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris (chest pain). Prescription required.
Metosux XL 50 is a prescription medicine containing Metoprolol succinate prolonged-release 50 mg. Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris (chest pain), chronic heart failure (as add-on where appropriate), and rate control in certain tachyarrhythmias as prescribed; secondary prevention after myocardial infarction as advised by doctor. It belongs to the group of medicines called Selective beta-1 blocker (beta-blocker).
Oral tablet (extended-release). The dose and how long you take it depend on what you are being treated for and how you respond. Do not take more, or for longer, than your doctor has advised.
The side effects seen most often with Metosux XL 50 are tiredness, dizziness, slow heart rate (bradycardia) and low blood pressure. Most are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. Tell your doctor if one persists or worries you.
Before you start, tell your doctor about any liver, kidney or heart problem, whether you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, and every other medicine you take, including supplements and ayurvedic preparations. Some of them can change how Metosux XL 50 works.
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris (chest pain), chronic heart failure (as add-on where appropriate), and rate control in certain tachyarrhythmias as prescribed; secondary prevention after myocardial infarction as advised by doctor
Most side effects of Metosux XL are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. The ones reported most often are:
Stop the medicine and get help at once for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
Oral tablet (extended-release). Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day; can be taken with or without food. Swallow whole with water; do not crush, chew, or split unless advised.
Metoprolol is a selective beta-1 adrenergic blocker. It reduces heart rate and the force of contraction, lowering blood pressure and myocardial oxygen demand. The extended-release (XL) formulation provides sustained effect over 24 hours.
Do not stop suddenly (may worsen angina/trigger heart attack); taper only under medical supervision. Use with caution in asthma/COPD, diabetes (may mask hypoglycemia symptoms), thyroid disorders, peripheral vascular disease, and in patients with low heart rate, heart block, or severe hypotension. In heart failure, initiate/titrate as directed; seek help for worsening breathlessness, swelling, or sudden weight gain. May cause dizziness—avoid driving if affected.
Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.
An overdose of this medicine can cause a dangerously slow heartbeat, a severe fall in blood pressure, wheezing and fits. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.
Other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering), verapamil/diltiazem (risk of bradycardia/heart block), digoxin (bradycardia), antiarrhythmics e.g., amiodarone (conduction effects), clonidine (rebound hypertension on withdrawal), insulin/oral antidiabetics (masked hypoglycemia), NSAIDs (may reduce BP-lowering effect), CYP2D6 inhibitors e.g., fluoxetine/paroxetine/quinidine (increase metoprolol levels)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from moisture and light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
