Tablet
Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus with co-existing hypertension/angina; helps control blood sugar along with control of blood pressure/heart rate as prescribed by doctor.
Metformin reduces glucose production in the liver, decreases intestinal glucose absorption and improves insulin sensitivity, lowering blood sugar. Metoprolol is a selective beta-1 blocker that reduces heart rate and cardiac workload, thereby lowering blood pressure and relieving angina symptoms.
Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily with food (preferably after a meal) to reduce stomach upset. Swallow whole with water; do not crush/chew unless advised. Monitor blood glucose regularly.
Nausea,diarrhoea,abdominal discomfort,loss of appetite,metallic taste,dizziness,tiredness,slow heart rate,cold hands/feet,headache
Prescription medicine. Metformin: risk of lactic acidosis (seek urgent care for rapid breathing, severe weakness, abdominal pain); use caution in kidney impairment, liver disease, dehydration, severe infection, and before/after contrast dye procedures—doctor may temporarily stop it. Metoprolol: may cause bradycardia/low BP; do not stop abruptly (risk of rebound hypertension/angina); use caution in asthma/COPD, heart block, heart failure, and diabetes (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms). Use with caution in elderly. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Alcohol (increases lactic acidosis risk),iodinated contrast media, other antidiabetics/insulin (hypoglycaemia),diuretics (may affect glucose control/kidney function),ACE inhibitors/ARBs (may enhance glucose lowering),NSAIDs (kidney risk),calcium channel blockers (verapamil/diltiazem) and digoxin (bradycardia),other beta-blockers,clonidine (rebound BP on withdrawal),CYP2D6 inhibitors like fluoxetine/paroxetine/quinidine (increase metoprolol levels)
