Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure); may be used as add-on therapy. Also used in some cases for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) to relieve urinary symptoms as advised by a doctor.
Prazosin is an alpha-1 adrenergic blocker. It relaxes blood vessels, lowering peripheral resistance and blood pressure. It can also relax smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder neck, improving urine flow in BPH.
Take orally exactly as prescribed. Often started at bedtime to reduce dizziness/first-dose fainting; may be taken with or without food. Swallow with water; do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
dizziness, headache, drowsiness, weakness/fatigue, nausea, palpitations, postural (orthostatic) hypotension, nasal congestion, swelling (edema)
May cause marked fall in blood pressure and fainting, especially with the first dose or dose increases—start low and take first dose at bedtime; rise slowly from sitting/lying. Use caution while driving/operating machinery until effects are known. Inform doctor if you have heart disease, low blood pressure, liver disease, or are on other BP-lowering medicines. Risk of hypotension increases with dehydration, alcohol, or hot weather. Not a first-line agent for uncomplicated hypertension in many patients; use only on prescription.
Other antihypertensives (ACE inhibitors/ARBs, beta-blockers, diuretics) may increase hypotension, PDE-5 inhibitors (sildenafil/tadalafil/vardenafil) increase risk of severe low BP, alcohol increases dizziness/low BP, other alpha-blockers increase hypotension; caution with medicines causing vasodilation (e.g., nitrates).
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
