Treatment of schizophrenia; treatment of bipolar disorder (mania and depression); adjunct treatment of major depressive disorder (as prescribed).
Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic that modulates neurotransmitters in the brain. It blocks serotonin (5‑HT2A) and dopamine (D2) receptors, helping reduce psychotic symptoms and stabilize mood. It also has antihistaminic activity, which can cause sedation.
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed. Usually taken once or twice daily; may be taken with or without food. Swallow with water; do not crush/chew unless advised. Avoid अचानक stopping; dose is typically titrated up/down by the doctor.
Sleepiness/drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, increased appetite, weight gain, orthostatic hypotension, fast heartbeat, fatigue, blurred vision
Prescription-only antipsychotic; do not stop abruptly. May cause marked drowsiness—avoid driving/machinery. Risk of orthostatic hypotension and falls (especially elderly). Can increase blood sugar and lipids; monitor if diabetic or at risk. May cause weight gain. Rare but serious: neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia, seizures, severe allergic reaction. Increased risk of suicidal thoughts in some patients; monitor mood/behavior changes. Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis have increased risk of stroke/death—generally not recommended. Use caution in liver disease, heart disease/arrhythmias, low potassium/magnesium, glaucoma/urinary retention risk.
Alcohol and other CNS depressants (increased sedation), antihypertensives (additive low BP), strong CYP3A4 inhibitors like ketoconazole/itraconazole/clarithromycin/ritonavir (increase quetiapine levels), CYP3A4 inducers like carbamazepine/phenytoin/rifampicin (reduce effect), QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., certain antiarrhythmics, macrolides, fluoroquinolones)
