Monograph
Tablet
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive reflux esophagitis, peptic/duodenal ulcer, gastritis/acid-peptic disease, Zollinger–Ellison syndrome; as part of H. pylori eradication regimen with antibiotics
Rabeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It irreversibly blocks the gastric H+/K+ ATPase (proton pump) in parietal cells, thereby reducing stomach acid secretion and relieving acidity-related symptoms and promoting ulcer healing.
Tablet (enteric-coated). Take as prescribed, usually once daily 30 minutes before food (preferably before breakfast). Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew.
Headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, vomiting, constipation, dizziness
Use with caution in severe liver disease. Long-term use may increase risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium, fractures, and gastric polyps; monitor if prolonged therapy. May increase risk of Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea; seek care for persistent watery diarrhea. Masking of gastric malignancy symptoms is possible—consult doctor if alarm symptoms (weight loss, vomiting, blood in stools) occur. If symptoms persist or worsen, medical review is needed.
Atazanavir/nelfinavir (avoid), warfarin (monitor INR), digoxin (may increase levels due to hypomagnesemia risk), methotrexate (high-dose; may increase levels), ketoconazole/itraconazole/posaconazole (reduced absorption), iron salts (reduced absorption), clopidogrel (possible reduced activation; use caution), antacids/sucralfate (separate dosing if advised)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
