Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of high cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia) and mixed dyslipidaemia; prevention of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) in high-risk patients as advised by a doctor.
Rosuvastatin is a statin (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor) that reduces cholesterol production in the liver. It lowers LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides and can modestly raise HDL (“good”) cholesterol, helping reduce plaque formation and cardiovascular risk.
Tablet for oral use. Take as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Continue diet and lifestyle measures; do not stop without medical advice.
Headache, muscle pain, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, weakness, dizziness, increased liver enzymes
Not recommended in active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevation of liver enzymes. Risk of muscle injury (myopathy/rhabdomyolysis) increases with higher doses, elderly age, kidney impairment, hypothyroidism, and interacting drugs—seek medical help for unexplained muscle pain/weakness, fever or dark urine. Use with caution in kidney disease and heavy alcohol use; periodic lipid and liver function monitoring may be advised.
Cyclosporine (avoid/contraindicated), gemfibrozil and other fibrates (increased myopathy risk), niacin (increased myopathy risk), protease inhibitors (e.g., lopinavir/ritonavir) and some antivirals (increased rosuvastatin levels), warfarin (may increase INR—monitor), ezetimibe (myopathy risk), antacids containing aluminium/magnesium (reduce absorption—separate dosing), colchicine (myopathy risk)
