Monograph
Bromocriptine (1.25mg)
Treatment of hyperprolactinaemia (amenorrhoea, galactorrhoea, infertility), prolactinoma, acromegaly (adjunct), Parkinson’s disease (adjunct), type 2 diabetes mellitus (where prescribed as bromocriptine quick-release)
Bromocriptine is an ergot-derived dopamine D2 receptor agonist. It inhibits prolactin release from the pituitary gland, reducing prolactin levels and related symptoms. Dopaminergic activity also helps improve motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease and can improve glycaemic control with the quick-release formulation.
Take orally exactly as prescribed, preferably with food to reduce nausea. Usually started at a low dose and increased gradually. Take at the same time each day; do not stop abruptly without medical advice.
Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, abdominal discomfort, constipation, fatigue, nasal congestion, orthostatic hypotension, drowsiness
May cause dizziness/low blood pressure—rise slowly from sitting/lying; avoid driving if drowsy. Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, psychiatric disorders, liver impairment, or history of fainting. Rare risks include severe hypotension, hallucinations/impulse control disorders, and fibrotic complications with long-term/high-dose ergot derivatives. Not recommended for routine suppression of lactation; seek medical advice if postpartum hypertension or pre-eclampsia. Monitor prolactin/clinical response as advised.
Macrolide antibiotics (e.g., erythromycin, clarithromycin) and azole antifungals (increase levels), protease inhibitors, dopamine antagonists (metoclopramide, antipsychotics) may reduce effect, antihypertensives (additive hypotension), other ergot alkaloids/vasoconstrictors (additive adverse effects), CNS depressants/alcohol (increased drowsiness)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
