Monograph
Tablet
Prevention of atherothrombotic events (heart attack, stroke) in adults with acute coronary syndrome (unstable angina, NSTEMI/STEMI) or history of myocardial infarction; used with low-dose aspirin unless contraindicated.
Ticagrelor is an antiplatelet medicine that reversibly inhibits the P2Y12 ADP receptor on platelets. This reduces platelet activation and aggregation, lowering the risk of clot formation in coronary arteries.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually twice daily (about 12 hours apart). Can be taken with or without food; swallow with water. Commonly used along with low-dose aspirin—do not change aspirin dose without medical advice. If a dose is missed, take the next dose at the usual time (do not double).
Bleeding, bruising, nosebleed, shortness of breath (dyspnoea), headache, dizziness, nausea, diarrhoea, increased uric acid
Increases risk of bleeding; seek urgent help for unusual bleeding, black stools, blood in urine, or vomiting blood. Tell your doctor before any surgery/dental procedure. Not recommended in active pathological bleeding or history of intracranial hemorrhage; use caution in severe liver disease. Dyspnoea can occur; report persistent or severe breathlessness. Avoid high-dose aspirin (>100 mg/day) unless advised, as it may reduce benefit. Use caution in patients with gout/hyperuricaemia, asthma/COPD, or low heart rate/heart block.
Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir) may increase ticagrelor levels; strong CYP3A4 inducers (rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, St John’s wort) may reduce effect; other anticoagulants/antiplatelets/NSAIDs increase bleeding risk; simvastatin/lovastatin (high doses) increased levels—dose limits may apply; digoxin levels may increase; caution with opioids (e.g., morphine) which may delay absorption.
Store below 25°C, in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
