Dissolution of cholesterol gallstones (in selected patients), treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC)/primary biliary cirrhosis, cholestatic liver diseases where UDCA is indicated (as prescribed)
Ursodeoxycholic acid is a hydrophilic bile acid that reduces cholesterol saturation in bile by decreasing hepatic cholesterol secretion and absorption. It improves bile flow and protects liver cells from toxic bile acids, helping in cholestatic liver conditions and gradual dissolution of cholesterol gallstones.
Take by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually with food; swallow whole with water. Dose and duration depend on indication (e.g., gallstones or PBC); take at the same time daily and do not stop without medical advice.
Diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion, constipation, headache, dizziness, rash, back pain
Use only under medical supervision. Not effective for calcified/pigment gallstones or non-functioning gallbladder; evaluation and imaging may be needed. Use with caution in biliary obstruction, acute gallbladder inflammation, pancreatitis, or severe liver disease; liver function tests may be monitored. Seek medical help for severe abdominal pain, persistent diarrhoea, jaundice worsening, or allergic reactions.
Bile acid sequestrants (cholestyramine, colestipol) and aluminium-containing antacids/sucralfate can reduce absorption (separate by 2–4 hours), oestrogens and oral contraceptives may increase gallstone risk, ciclosporin levels may change (monitor), some lipid-lowering agents (e.g., clofibrate) may promote gallstones
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
