Tablet
Dissolution of cholesterol gallstones (in selected patients), primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), cholestatic liver diseases with impaired bile flow, biliary sludge associated with cholestasis
Ursodeoxycholic acid is a hydrophilic bile acid that reduces cholesterol saturation in bile by decreasing hepatic cholesterol secretion and intestinal absorption. It also improves bile flow and protects liver cells from bile acid–induced injury in cholestatic conditions.
Take by mouth as prescribed by the doctor, preferably with food. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew unless advised. Dose and duration depend on body weight and indication; take at the same time daily.
Diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, constipation, headache, rash, pruritus, increased liver enzymes
Use only under medical supervision for gallstone dissolution and cholestatic liver disease. Periodic liver function tests are recommended. Not suitable for calcified gallstones, non-functioning gallbladder, acute gallbladder/bile duct inflammation, or biliary obstruction. Use with caution in severe liver disease and if persistent diarrhoea occurs. Seek medical advice if jaundice worsens, severe abdominal pain, or allergic reactions occur.
Cholestyramine, colestipol, colesevelam (reduce absorption), aluminium-containing antacids/activated charcoal (reduce absorption), ciclosporin (may alter levels—monitor), oestrogens/oral contraceptives and clofibrate (may increase cholesterol in bile and reduce efficacy for gallstones)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
