Monograph
Tablet
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (post-meal blood sugar control), used as add-on therapy along with diet and exercise; may be used with other antidiabetic medicines when needed
Voglibose is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor that slows down the breakdown and absorption of carbohydrates in the intestine. This reduces the rise in blood glucose after meals (postprandial hyperglycaemia).
Oral tablet. Take as prescribed, usually just before the start of each main meal (or with the first bite of food). Do not skip meals after taking; follow diet and exercise advice and monitor blood sugar regularly.
Flatulence, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, bloating, nausea
Use with caution in patients with gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal obstruction, ulceration) as it may worsen symptoms. Risk of low blood sugar increases if used with insulin or sulfonylureas—if hypoglycaemia occurs, treat with oral glucose (dextrose) rather than sucrose. Monitor liver function if advised by clinician. Consult doctor in elderly, kidney/liver disease, or if persistent severe abdominal symptoms occur.
Insulin, sulfonylureas (e.g., glimepiride, gliclazide), metformin (additive glucose-lowering), intestinal adsorbents (may reduce effect), digestive enzyme preparations (may reduce effect)
Store below 25°C in a dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
