Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus; helps control post‑meal (postprandial) blood glucose, usually as an add‑on to diet, exercise and/or other antidiabetic medicines
Voglibose is an alpha‑glucosidase inhibitor that delays the breakdown and absorption of carbohydrates in the intestine. This reduces the rise in blood glucose levels after meals and improves overall glycaemic control.
Oral tablet; usually taken just before the start of a meal (or with the first bite) as prescribed by the doctor. Follow diet and exercise advice; do not skip meals after taking. If you miss a dose, take it with the next meal—do not double the dose.
Flatulence, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, bloating, nausea, increased bowel movements
Use with caution in liver disease; periodic liver function monitoring may be advised. Not recommended in diabetic ketoacidosis, severe infection/trauma, or in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal obstruction, or chronic intestinal disorders. Risk of hypoglycaemia increases when used with insulin or sulfonylureas—treat low sugar with glucose (dextrose) rather than sucrose/table sugar. Consult doctor in elderly and if severe abdominal symptoms occur.
Insulin, sulfonylureas (e.g., glimepiride, gliclazide) – increased hypoglycaemia risk; digoxin – may reduce absorption; intestinal adsorbents (e.g., activated charcoal) and digestive enzyme preparations – may reduce effect; other antidiabetic medicines – additive glucose lowering
