Uses & Benefits
Prevention and treatment of skin infections; antiseptic for minor cuts, wounds, abrasions, burns, ulcers, and infected dermatoses; pre- and post-operative wound antisepsis as advised by doctor.
How It Works
Povidone-iodine is a broad-spectrum topical antiseptic that slowly releases iodine. Iodine penetrates microorganisms and inactivates proteins and enzymes, killing bacteria, fungi, viruses and some protozoa.
Directions for Use
For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer of ointment 1–2 times daily or as directed by a doctor. Can be covered with a sterile dressing if needed; avoid contact with eyes and mouth; wash hands after use.
Side Effects
Skin irritation, burning or stinging, redness, itching, dryness, rash, contact dermatitis, skin staining
Warnings & Precautions
Do not use if allergic to iodine/povidone-iodine. Avoid prolonged use over large areas, on deep puncture wounds or severe burns unless advised by a doctor. Use with caution in thyroid disorders, in children, and in patients receiving lithium; may affect thyroid function with excessive use. Stop and seek medical advice if irritation, swelling, or persistent pain occurs. Not for internal use; avoid eyes/ears (especially with perforated eardrum).
Drug Interactions
Lithium (risk of thyroid dysfunction), other topical antiseptics/agents (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, silver preparations, chlorhexidine, mercury-containing products) may reduce efficacy or increase irritation; may interfere with thyroid function tests and some lab tests due to iodine.
