Before you take it
Consult doctor (generally considered safe when prescribed)
Use with caution (may worsen stomach upset; avoid excess alcohol)
Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as acute bacterial sinusitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, otitis media, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted infections (e.g., uncomplicated chlamydial urethritis/cervicitis) as prescribed.
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This stops bacterial growth and helps clear the infection.
Take orally exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Usually taken once daily; may be taken with or without food (take with food if stomach upset occurs). Swallow with water and complete the full course; avoid taking antacids containing aluminum/magnesium within 2 hours of the dose.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, dizziness, taste disturbance, rash
Use only for bacterial infections (not viral). Complete the prescribed course to prevent resistance. Use with caution in liver disease, history of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction with macrolides, myasthenia gravis, and in patients with QT prolongation/arrhythmias or electrolyte imbalance (risk of serious heart rhythm problems). Stop and seek medical help if severe diarrhea (possible C. difficile), allergic reaction, or severe skin reactions occur.
Antacids (aluminum/magnesium) reduce absorption (separate dosing), warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk—monitor INR), antiarrhythmics/QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol, quinolones, antipsychotics) (increased arrhythmia risk), digoxin (may increase levels), cyclosporine (may increase levels), statins (rare risk of myopathy), ergot derivatives (avoid)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
