Uses & Benefits
Treatment of epilepsy/seizure disorders (as adjunct therapy for partial-onset seizures); may be used for other seizure types as decided by the physician.
How It Works
Zonisamide is an antiepileptic medicine that helps reduce abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It blocks voltage-gated sodium channels and T-type calcium channels and may enhance inhibitory neurotransmission, thereby lowering seizure frequency.
Directions for Use
Take tablet/capsule exactly as prescribed by the doctor, usually once or twice daily. Can be taken with or without food; take at the same time each day and swallow whole with water. Do not stop suddenly; dose is usually titrated and tapered as advised.
Side Effects
dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability
Warnings & Precautions
Prescription-only antiepileptic. Do not stop abruptly (risk of rebound seizures). May cause drowsiness/dizziness—avoid driving/alcohol until you know the effect. Risk of metabolic acidosis, kidney stones, decreased sweating/heat intolerance (especially in hot weather/children), serious skin reactions, and mood changes/suicidal thoughts—seek medical help if symptoms occur. Use caution in kidney or liver disease; ensure adequate hydration. Contains sulfonamide—use caution in sulfa allergy.
Drug Interactions
Other CNS depressants (benzodiazepines, opioids, alcohol) may increase sedation; carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (topiramate, acetazolamide) increase risk of metabolic acidosis/kidney stones; CYP3A4 inducers (carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, rifampicin) may reduce zonisamide levels; CYP3A4 inhibitors may increase levels.
