Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of herpes simplex infections (genital herpes, cold sores), treatment of initial and recurrent episodes; treatment of varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles); suppressive therapy to reduce recurrence of genital herpes (as prescribed).
Acyclovir is an antiviral that is converted inside virus-infected cells to an active form that inhibits viral DNA polymerase. This stops viral DNA replication and limits spread of herpes viruses, reducing severity and duration of outbreaks.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed; start as early as possible after symptoms begin. Can be taken with or without food; take with plenty of water. Maintain adequate hydration during therapy; do not skip doses and complete the course as advised.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, fatigue, rash, itching
Use with caution in kidney disease/elderly; dose adjustment may be required. Maintain good hydration to reduce risk of kidney-related side effects. Seek medical help for allergic reactions, severe skin rash, confusion/tremors (rare, more likely with renal impairment). Not a cure for herpes; can still transmit—practice safe sex and avoid contact during active lesions.
Probenecid (may increase acyclovir levels), other nephrotoxic drugs like aminoglycosides/amphotericin B/ciclosporin/tacrolimus (increased kidney risk), mycophenolate mofetil (may increase levels of both), cimetidine (may increase acyclovir levels)
