Monograph
Tablet
Used to lower high cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides and to raise HDL; helps reduce risk of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular events in patients at risk.
Rosuvastatin is an HMG‑CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) that reduces cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This increases LDL receptor activity, leading to increased clearance of LDL cholesterol from the blood and reduction of triglycerides.
Take orally as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water; continue diet/exercise and do not stop without medical advice.
Headache, muscle pain, abdominal pain, nausea, weakness, constipation, dizziness, increased liver enzymes
Not recommended in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Use with caution in liver disease, heavy alcohol use, untreated hypothyroidism, kidney impairment, and in elderly; risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis—seek care for unexplained muscle pain/weakness, fever or dark urine. Liver function and lipid profile may be monitored; stop and consult doctor if jaundice or significant fatigue occurs.
Cyclosporine, gemfibrozil, other fibrates, niacin, protease inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir/atazanavir), warfarin and other anticoagulants, colchicine, ezetimibe, antacids containing aluminium/magnesium (reduce absorption—separate dosing)
