What is the PPBS Test?

The PPBS test measures your blood sugar 2 hours after you start a meal. It shows how well your body brings sugar down after eating, which is often the first thing to go wrong in early diabetes.

A PPBS after an ordinary meal is not standardised the way an OGTT is, so it is read with your fasting sugar and HbA1c. A glucose of 200 mg/dL or more at any time, with symptoms of diabetes, meets the ADA criterion for diabetes.

Ranges differ between laboratories and methods. The reference range printed on your own report is the one to read your result against.

High
A 2-hour value of 140 mg/dL or more suggests the body is not clearing sugar well after meals. In people with diabetes, readings above 180 mg/dL usually mean treatment or diet needs review.
Low
A low value after a meal is uncommon. It can happen with diabetes medicines, after stomach surgery, or with a very small meal, and should be discussed with your doctor.

One result is not a diagnosis. A doctor reads it with your symptoms, history, medicines and other tests.

Post-meal sugar below 140 mg/dL
Normal two hours after the start of a meal, for someone without diabetes.
Post-meal sugar 140 to 199 mg/dL
Higher than normal after eating. It can point to prediabetes; doctors usually confirm with an HbA1c or a glucose tolerance test rather than a single post-meal reading. Often checked next: HbA1c Test.
Post-meal sugar 200 mg/dL or higher
Strongly suggests diabetes. The diagnosis is confirmed with an HbA1c, a fasting sugar or a standard 75 g glucose tolerance test. Often checked next: HbA1c Test.
