What is the Dengue NS1 Test?

The dengue NS1 test detects NS1, a protein made by the dengue virus, in the blood. It is most useful in the first five days of fever, before antibodies appear. A positive result supports an early diagnosis of dengue.

What your Dengue NS1 Test result means

Positive (reactive)
Dengue virus protein was found, which supports current dengue infection. The doctor will usually follow the platelet count and haematocrit over the next few days.
Negative (non-reactive)
NS1 was not detected. This does not rule out dengue, particularly after day 5 of fever or in a second dengue infection, when NS1 levels can be low. A dengue IgM test may be added.

One result is not a diagnosis. A doctor reads it with your symptoms, history, medicines and other tests.

On which day of fever should the NS1 test be done?
NS1 is best tested from day 1 to day 5 of fever. After about day 5, antibody tests (dengue IgM) become more useful because NS1 levels fall.
What is the difference between NS1, IgM and IgG in dengue?
NS1 is a viral protein found early in the illness. IgM antibodies usually appear from day 4 to 5 and suggest recent infection. IgG appears later in a first infection and rises quickly in a repeat infection.
Can dengue NS1 be negative and still be dengue?
Yes. NS1 can be missed after the first few days or in a second infection. If the fever and blood counts suggest dengue, a doctor may repeat testing or order IgM.
Does a positive NS1 mean my platelets will fall?
Not necessarily. Most people with dengue recover without serious problems. The test confirms the infection; the platelet count, haematocrit and warning signs such as vomiting, abdominal pain or bleeding guide care.
