What is the LFT Test?
The LFT is a group of blood tests that show how your liver is working and whether liver cells or bile ducts are injured. It usually includes bilirubin, SGOT (AST), SGPT (ALT), alkaline phosphatase, GGT, total protein, albumin and globulin.

Enzyme ranges vary more between labs than most tests. The ACG notes that the upper limit of ALT in healthy adults is lower than many lab ranges: about 29–33 U/L for men and 19–25 U/L for women.
Ranges differ between laboratories and methods. The reference range printed on your own report is the one to read your result against.
What your LFT Test result means
- High SGPT and SGOT
- Point to liver cell injury. Fatty liver, alcohol, viral hepatitis and medicines are common causes. Very high levels, in the hundreds or thousands, suggest acute hepatitis or reduced blood flow to the liver.
- High ALP and GGT
- Suggest a problem with bile flow, such as a stone or narrowing in the bile duct, or the effect of some medicines.
- High bilirubin
- Causes jaundice. Mostly indirect bilirubin points to red cell breakdown or Gilbert syndrome; mostly direct bilirubin points to liver disease or blocked bile ducts.
- Low albumin
- Can reflect long-standing liver disease, poor nutrition, or protein loss through the kidneys.
One result is not a diagnosis. A doctor reads it with your symptoms, history, medicines and other tests.
