How to choose
Look for potassium nitrate, which calms the tooth nerve, or stannous fluoride and similar agents that block exposed dentine. Fluoride protects against cavities, so keep it in the formula. Choose a mild flavour if mint stings. Brush twice a day with a soft brush, and spit rather than rinse so the active stays on teeth. Results take two to four weeks of regular use. A rapid-relief paste can be massaged on the sensitive spot as the pack directs.
Who really needs this
People with twinges from cold, hot, sweet or sour food and receding gums, worn enamel or recent whitening. See a dentist if pain lasts, wakes you at night, is in one tooth only, or comes with swelling. That can mean a cavity, crack or infection that toothpaste cannot treat.
