Medically reviewed by Dr. Balaji Krishnan, MBBS · Updated August 2026
Alcarex Eye Drops contains Sodium carboxymethylcellulose 0.5% w/v (lubricant eye drops). It belongs to the Ocular demulcent (cellulose polymer lubricant) class of medicines.
Sodium carboxymethylcellulose is a tear substitute/lubricant. It forms a protective, moistening film on the eye surface to reduce dryness and soothe irritation.
For ophthalmic use only. Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) 3-4 times daily or as directed by a doctor; may be used more frequently if needed. Wash hands, avoid touching dropper tip, and keep bottle tightly closed. If using other eye medicines, keep a 10-15 minute gap; remove contact lenses before use and reinsert after 15 minutes unless advised otherwise.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
Take the missed dose of Alcarex as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.
Taking more Alcarex than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Alcarex are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
| Pregnancy | Generally safe (minimal systemic absorption); consult doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding |

Do not use if allergic to any ingredient. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to avoid contamination. Discontinue and seek medical advice if eye pain, vision changes, persistent redness/irritation, or discharge occurs. Use with caution in eye infection or injury unless prescribed. Discard bottle as per label instructions after opening; do not use if solution changes color or becomes cloudy.
No significant systemic interactions expected due to local use. May dilute other ophthalmic medicines—separate by 10-15 minutes.
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep container tightly closed.
