Amitrip 25 mg contains Amitriptyline (25mg). It belongs to the Tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) class of medicines.

How Amitrip 25 mg works

Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant that increases levels of serotonin and noradrenaline in the brain by inhibiting their reuptake. It also modulates pain pathways, which helps in chronic nerve pain and headache prevention.

How to take Amitrip 25 mg

Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at bedtime (may cause drowsiness). Can be taken with or without food; take with food if stomach upset occurs. Do not stop suddenly—dose should be tapered on medical advice.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Amitrip 25mg Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause fits, dangerous heart rhythm disturbance and coma, and is particularly dangerous with the older tricyclic medicines. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Amitrip 25 mg

Most side effects of Amitrip are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• blurred vision
• weight gain
• nausea
• headache
• difficulty urinating
• increased heart rate

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

May cause sedation and impair driving/operating machinery. Risk of suicidal thoughts in young adults, especially when starting or changing dose. Avoid abrupt discontinuation (withdrawal symptoms). Use with caution in heart disease/arrhythmias, recent heart attack, glaucoma, urinary retention/prostatic enlargement, seizures, bipolar disorder, liver disease, elderly (falls/confusion). Seek urgent care for severe mood changes, serotonin syndrome symptoms, or allergic reactions.

Do not take Amitrip if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Must not be combined with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, or started within the gap your doctor specifies after one.

Interactions with other medicines

MAO inhibitors (contraindicated), other serotonergic drugs (SSRIs/SNRIs, tramadol, linezolid) increasing serotonin syndrome risk, CNS depressants (alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids) causing excess sedation, anticholinergics causing increased side effects, QT-prolonging drugs (some antiarrhythmics/antipsychotics/macrolides), cimetidine (may increase levels), carbamazepine/phenytoin (may reduce levels), antihypertensives (may alter BP)

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Amitrip 25 mg

Amitrip 25mg Tablet may cause sleepiness. Take it at bedtime and do not drive or perform any activity requiring concentration until you know how it affects you. Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Amitrip 25mg Tablet, as it may cause excessive sleepiness. Monitor your weight during treatment, as this medicine can cause weight gain and increased appetite. It may cause a sudden drop in blood pressure. Rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down. Talk to your doctor if you notice sudden mood changes or develop suicidal thoughts. Pay close attention to any changes, especially sudden changes, in mood, behavior, thoughts, or feelings. This is particularly important when the medicine is started or when the dose is changed. This medication can significantly reduce saliva production, leading to dry mouth (xerostomia). Maintain strict oral hygiene by brushing twice daily with toothpaste and flossing regularly. This medication may reduce tear production, leading to dry eyes. If you wear contact lenses, your doctor may advise using preservative-free lubricating eye drops to maintain proper eye and lens hygiene.
