Composition of Aten D Tablet

Aten D Tablet contains Atenolol (50mg) + Indapamide (2.5mg). It belongs to the Beta-blocker + Thiazide diuretic class of medicines.

How Aten D Tablet works

Atenolol is a beta-1 selective beta-blocker that slows heart rate and reduces the force of contraction, lowering blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic that increases salt and water excretion, reducing fluid volume and vascular resistance.

How to take Aten D Tablet

Take by mouth as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without food; swallow with water. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Aten-D Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause a dangerously slow heartbeat, a severe fall in blood pressure, wheezing and fits. It can cause severe dehydration, a sharp fall in blood pressure and dangerous salt imbalances. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Aten D Tablet

Most side effects of Aten D are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• dizziness
• fatigue
• slow heart rate
• low blood pressure
• increased urination
• headache
• nausea
• weakness
• electrolyte imbalance (low potassium/sodium)
• increased blood sugar
• increased uric acid

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Use with caution in diabetes (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), asthma/COPD (beta-blockers may worsen bronchospasm), kidney or liver impairment, gout, electrolyte imbalance, and in the elderly. Monitor blood pressure, pulse, electrolytes, renal function and blood glucose periodically. Do not discontinue abruptly (risk of rebound hypertension/angina). Seek help for severe dizziness, fainting, very slow pulse, wheeze, or signs of dehydration.

Do not take Aten D if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for people with a very slow heart rate, certain heart block disorders, or uncontrolled heart failure. Generally avoided in severe asthma. Not for people who are unable to pass urine, or who are severely dehydrated.

Interactions with other medicines

Other antihypertensives (additive hypotension), calcium channel blockers like verapamil/diltiazem (bradycardia/heart block), digoxin (bradycardia), NSAIDs (reduced BP control, renal risk), lithium (increased lithium levels/toxicity with thiazides), antidiabetic medicines/insulin (altered glucose control), corticosteroids or amphotericin B (low potassium), ACE inhibitors/ARBs or potassium supplements (electrolyte changes), alcohol (increased dizziness)

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original strip and out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Aten D Tablet

It is a combination of two blood pressure lowering medications used for the treatment of high blood pressure. It can be taken with or without food. Do not stop taking Aten-D Tablet suddenly as it can cause your blood pressure to rise suddenly thereby increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. It may cause dizziness. If this happens to you, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position. It can hide symptoms of low blood sugar if you're diabetic. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly. Aten-D Tablet may cause dehydration. Drink plenty of fluids and Inform your doctor if you develop extreme thirst, muscle weakness or very dry mouth.
