A substitute contains the same active ingredient (salt), in the same strength, as Azithral Eye Ointment. The medicine inside is the same — the brand name, manufacturer and price are what differ.
All medicines sold in India, branded or generic, must meet the quality standards set by the national drug regulator (CDSCO). A lower price does not mean lower quality.
Please confirm with your doctor or pharmacist before switching brands — they will check that the strength and form match your prescription.
Azithral Eye Ointment contains Azithromycin (1% w/w).
Treatment of Bacterial eye infections
Azithral Eye Ointment is an antibiotic. It works by preventing synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions. Thus, it stops the bacteria from growing, and prevents the infection from spreading.
This medicine is for external use only. Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the tube close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the tube and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
If you miss a dose of Azithral Eye Ointment, use it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Taking more Azithral than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Azithral are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every medicine you take, including over-the-counter products, vitamins and herbal or ayurvedic preparations, before starting Azithral. Some combinations can change how Azithral works or raise the chance of side effects.
Store Azithral below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the pack tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Do not use it after the expiry date printed on the pack.
Wash your hands before and after using Azithral Eye Ointment to avoid spreading infection. Tilt your head back, pull down your lower eyelid, and apply only the prescribed amount without touching the tip of Azithral Eye Ointment to your eye. Keep your eyes closed for a minute after applying to let the medicine absorb properly. Do not wear contact lenses while using this medicine unless your doctor says it is okay. Store the medicine as instructed and discard it after the recommended duration, even if some is left or not expired.
