How Benuliv Syrup works

This medicine combines 9 active ingredients: D-panthenol, Silymarin, L-ornithine L-aspartate, Lecithin, Tricholine Citrate, Inositol, Folic Acid, Taurine and Methionine. D-panthenol holds water in the skin and restores the barrier that dry, damaged skin has lost. Silymarin supports the liver cells and helps the flow of bile. L-ornithine L-aspartate supports the liver cells and helps the flow of bile. Lecithin supplies omega-3 fatty acids, which help lower blood triglyceride levels. Tricholine Citrate supports the liver cells and helps the flow of bile. Inositol replaces a B vitamin your body needs to make red blood cells, to keep nerves healthy and to release energy from food. Folic Acid replaces a B vitamin your body needs to make red blood cells, to keep nerves healthy and to release energy from food. Taurine supplies protein and amino acids, the building blocks your body uses to repair and maintain muscle and tissue. Methionine supplies protein and amino acids, the building blocks your body uses to repair and maintain muscle and tissue.

How to take Benuliv Syrup

Shake the bottle well before each dose and measure it with the cup, spoon or dropper supplied — a kitchen spoon is not an accurate measure. Take it with or after food. Follow the dose and the duration written on your prescription.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine is not a realistic risk from a moisturiser used on the skin. It may cause loose motions and stomach upset. It may cause loose motions and a small increase in bleeding tendency. It is unlikely to cause serious harm, because the body passes surplus B vitamins out in the urine. It may cause stomach upset and, with prolonged excess, puts avoidable load on the kidneys. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Benuliv Syrup

Most side effects of Benuliv are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

  • Mild stinging on broken skin
  • Greasy feel
  • Rarely
  • a rash
  • Loose motions
  • Nausea
  • Stomach discomfort
  • Fishy aftertaste or burps
  • Indigestion
  • Stomach upset
  • Harmless bright yellow urine
  • Bloating
  • Flatulence

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Apply generously and often — several times a day, and always within a few minutes of a bath while the skin is still damp. Some paraffin-based emollients are flammable when they soak into clothing and bedding. Keep away from open flames and cigarettes. Stop if the skin becomes more red, itchy or sore after use. A liver supplement does not treat the cause of liver disease. Alcohol, weight, viral hepatitis and medicines are what have to be addressed. Stop alcohol completely if you have any liver condition. Report yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, swelling of the abdomen or confusion without delay. Keep your liver function tests and follow-up appointments. Tell your doctor if you take a blood thinner — high doses of omega-3 can add to its effect. Check the source if you have a fish or shellfish allergy. Tingling, numbness or burning in the hands and feet should be assessed by a doctor rather than self-treated — a supplement does not address the cause. Folic acid can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency while nerve damage continues, so B12 should be checked before taking folic acid long term. Bright yellow urine after a B-complex dose is expected and harmless. Tell your doctor before taking a protein supplement if you have kidney disease — the protein load matters. Drink plenty of water while taking a protein supplement. Check the label for milk or soy if you have an allergy or are lactose intolerant.

Do not take Benuliv if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for anyone with a known allergy to fish, shellfish or any ingredient in the pack. Not for people with inherited disorders of amino-acid metabolism, or with a known allergy to the protein source.

Interactions with other medicines

No significant interactions are expected. Tell your doctor about every medicine and supplement you take — the liver processes most of them. May add to the effect of blood thinners and antiplatelet medicines. Long-term metformin, acid-reducing medicines and some anti-epileptics lower B12 or folate levels. Tell your doctor if you take levodopa, as vitamin B6 can reduce its effect. No significant medicine interactions are expected for most protein supplements.

How to store Benuliv Syrup

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Once opened, use it within the period printed on the pack. Keep out of the reach of children.

Expert advice for Benuliv Syrup

Use lukewarm water, a soap substitute and short baths. Smooth it on in the direction the hair grows rather than rubbing it in hard. Keep using it when the skin looks normal — that is what prevents the next flare. Avoid alcohol entirely, and avoid unnecessary medicines and unregulated herbal preparations. Weight loss and exercise are the proven treatment for fatty liver. Taking it with a meal, or keeping the capsules in the fridge, reduces fishy burps. Continue your diet and exercise alongside it. A supplement corrects a deficiency; it is not a general energy tonic. If you are on it for nerve symptoms, keep your review appointment so the underlying cause is looked for. Mix it as directed on the pack; a thicker mix is not a stronger one. Use it alongside meals, not instead of them, unless your dietitian has said otherwise.
