Composition of Derobin Ointment

Derobin Ointment contains Salicylic Acid (1.15%w/w) + Dithranol (1.15%w/w) + Coal Tar (5.3%w/w). It belongs to the Keratolytic + Antimitotic + Tar preparation class of medicines.

How Derobin Ointment works

Salicylic acid is keratolytic and helps loosen and remove scales, improving penetration of other agents. Coal tar reduces epidermal proliferation and inflammation. Dithranol slows excessive skin cell growth in psoriasis.

How to take Derobin Ointment

Use exactly as prescribed. Apply a thin film on affected plaques once daily (often at night) and wash off after the advised contact time; avoid normal skin. Can stain skin/clothes; wash hands after use.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Apply it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next application, skip the missed one — applying extra does not make up for it.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe irritation when far too much cream is applied; an oral retinoid taken in excess can cause headache, vomiting and liver injury. It can cause a fall in blood pressure and a racing heart when far too much is applied to the skin. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Derobin Ointment

Most side effects of Derobin are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• photosensitivity

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Avoid use on face, genitals, skin folds and broken/infected skin unless directed. May cause severe irritation if overused; start with small areas. Avoid excessive sun/UV exposure; use sunscreen/protective clothing. Not for children unless prescribed.

Do not take Derobin if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Oral retinoids are absolutely contraindicated in pregnancy and in anyone who might become pregnant without a pregnancy prevention programme. Topical retinoids are avoided in pregnancy. Not for use on inflamed, broken or sunburnt scalp.

Interactions with other medicines

Avoid combining with other irritant topical agents (strong acids, retinoids, alcohol-based products) on the same area unless advised. Increased irritation may occur with UV therapy.

How to store Derobin Ointment

Store below 25°C, protect from light and heat. Keep container tightly closed.

Expert advice for Derobin Ointment

Apply retinoids at night to clean, dry skin, and moisturise afterwards. Give it at least eight to twelve weeks before judging whether it works. Do not pick or squeeze spots — that is what leaves scars. Be consistent — irregular use gives no result. Have persistent or patchy hair loss assessed; thyroid disease, iron deficiency and other causes are treatable.
