Composition of Gluconorm Vg 1

Gluconorm Vg 1 contains Glimepiride 1 mg + Metformin Hydrochloride 500 mg (sustained release) + Voglibose 0.2 mg (tablet). It belongs to the Biguanide + Sulfonylurea + Alpha-glucosidase inhibitor class of medicines.

• Type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when blood sugar is not adequately controlled with diet

How Gluconorm Vg 1 works

Metformin reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity. Glimepiride increases insulin release from the pancreas. Voglibose slows carbohydrate digestion/absorption in the gut, reducing post-meal blood sugar spikes.

How to take Gluconorm Vg 1

Take by mouth as prescribed, usually once daily with the first main meal; swallow whole with water and do not crush/chew (SR tablet). Follow diet and exercise advice; monitor blood glucose regularly.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe and prolonged low blood sugar, which may lead to fits or unconsciousness. It can cause a dangerous build-up of acid in the blood, with vomiting, severe weakness and laboured breathing. It may cause low blood sugar and marked stomach upset. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Gluconorm Vg are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

Risk of hypoglycaemia (especially with missed meals, excess exercise, alcohol, or with other antidiabetics); metformin-associated lactic acidosis is rare but serious—avoid/use caution in severe kidney disease, severe liver disease, dehydration, sepsis, hypoxia, or heavy alcohol use. Check renal function before and during therapy; temporarily stop metformin before/after iodinated contrast or major surgery as advised by doctor. Use caution in elderly and in patients with irregular eating habits; seek help for severe weakness, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting, or confusion.

Do not take Gluconorm Vg if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for type 1 diabetes or for diabetic ketoacidosis. Not for people with severe kidney or liver disease. Not for people with severe kidney disease, severe liver disease, or an acute illness causing dehydration. Not for people who have had diabetic ketoacidosis. Not for people with heart failure, active bladder cancer or unexplained blood in the urine.

Interactions with other medicines

Alcohol (increases hypoglycaemia/lactic acidosis risk),iodinated contrast media,insulin/other antidiabetics (additive hypoglycaemia),beta-blockers (mask hypoglycaemia),corticosteroids/diuretics (raise glucose),ACE inhibitors (may increase hypoglycaemia),fluoroquinolones (glucose disturbances),cimetidine (raises metformin levels),rifampicin (reduces sulfonylurea effect),azoles/macrolides (may increase glimepiride effect)

How to store Gluconorm Vg 1

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original strip and out of reach of children.

Take it shortly before a meal, and eat that meal. Check your sugar as often as your doctor has asked, especially when your routine changes. Take it with or just after food to reduce stomach upset. Keep taking it even when your sugar readings look normal — that is the medicine working. Continue your diet and physical activity; this medicine works alongside them, not instead of them. Take it with the first mouthful of your meal so it can act on that meal. Expect some wind in the first weeks; it usually settles.
