Finasteride 5 mg
Linaster-5 mg Tablet is used for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) to reduce enlarged prostate size, improve urinary symptoms (weak stream, hesitancy, incomplete emptying) and lower risk of acute urinary retention and need for surgery.
Medically reviewed by Dr. Balaji Krishnan, MBBS · Updated August 2026
Linaster-5 mg Tablet contains Finasteride 5 mg. It belongs to the 5-alpha reductase inhibitor class of medicines.
Finasteride inhibits 5-alpha reductase (type II), reducing conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Lower DHT levels shrink the prostate over time and improve urine flow and related BPH symptoms.
Tablet for oral use. Take as prescribed by the doctor, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow whole; do not crush or break. Benefits may take 3–6 months of regular use.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
Take the missed dose of Linaster-5 mg as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.
Taking more Linaster-5 mg than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Linaster-5 mg are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
| Pregnancy | Not recommended (contraindicated in pregnancy); women who are or may become pregnant should not handle crushed/broken tablets |
|---|---|
| Alcohol | Use with caution (no specific interaction, but alcohol may worsen urinary symptoms and dizziness) |
| Habit forming | No |
For use in men only. Not for women/children. Finasteride can cause abnormalities in a male fetus—pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should not handle crushed/broken tablets. Inform doctor if you have liver disease or any breast lumps/pain or nipple discharge. May lower PSA levels and affect prostate cancer screening—tell your doctor/lab that you take finasteride. Seek medical help for allergic reactions or breast changes.
No major clinically significant interactions are common; however, inform doctor about all medicines. Caution with other BPH medicines (e.g., alpha-blockers like tamsulosin) due to additive symptom relief/low BP risk, and with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors/inducers (potential to alter finasteride levels though usually not clinically significant).
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original strip and out of reach of children.
