How Ocurest AH Eye Drops works

Ocurest AH Eye Drop is a combination of five medicines: Chlorpheniramine Maleate, Camphor, Menthol, Phenylephrine and Naphazoline which relieve eye itching/discomfort caused by allergies. Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an antiallergic which blocks the action of certain chemical messengers responsible for red, itchy, teary eyes. Camphor and Menthol provide a cooling effect to the eye. Phenylephrine and Naphazoline are decongestants which work by narrowing blood vessels of the eye to relieve inflammation (redness and swelling).

How to take Ocurest AH Eye Drops

This medicine is for external use only. Use it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off the extra liquid.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

If you miss a dose of Ocurest AH Eye Drop, skip it and continue with your normal schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe drowsiness, a fast heartbeat, confusion and, in children, agitation and fits. It is unlikely from skin use, but swallowing these preparations can be serious, particularly in children. It can cause vomiting, severe drowsiness, a racing heart and, with codeine, dangerously slow breathing. It may cause a racing heart, restlessness and a rise in blood pressure if swallowed. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Warnings and precautions

Older antihistamines cause marked drowsiness — do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this affects you. Tell your doctor promptly about any change in mood, sleep, agitation or unusual thoughts while taking montelukast; this is uncommon but recognised. This relieves the symptoms of an allergy; it does not treat the cause, and it is not a treatment for an acute asthma attack. Seek emergency care for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing. For external use only. Keep it away from the eyes, mouth and broken skin. Do not apply a heating pad or hot water bottle over the treated area — this can cause a burn. Do not bandage tightly over it unless your doctor has told you to. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying, unless your hands are the area being treated. Stop if the skin becomes severely irritated or blisters. See a doctor if a cough lasts more than a week, or comes with fever, breathlessness, chest pain or blood in the sputum. Do not give cough and cold preparations to young children except on a doctor's advice. Do not combine two cough preparations — they frequently contain the same ingredients, and the doses add up. Preparations containing codeine can cause dependence and must be used only for the period your doctor specifies. Do not use a medicated nasal decongestant for more than the few days stated on the pack. Longer use causes rebound congestion that is worse than the original block. Saline drops and sprays have no such limit and are safe for repeated use. Use your own bottle only — sharing spreads infection.

Do not take Ocurest AH if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. The sedating antihistamines are not suitable for very young children, or for people with glaucoma or an enlarged prostate, without medical advice. Not for use on broken, infected or badly inflamed skin. Codeine-containing preparations are not for children, or for anyone with breathing difficulty. Decongestant sprays are not suitable for very young children without medical advice.

Interactions with other medicines

Alcohol, sleeping tablets and other sedating medicines add to the drowsiness. Tell your doctor about all cold and cough preparations — many already contain an antihistamine. Topical anti-inflammatory gels add to the effect of the same medicine taken by mouth; tell your doctor if you use both. Sedating ingredients add to the effect of alcohol and sleeping tablets. Decongestants such as phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine can raise blood pressure — tell your doctor if you are hypertensive. Decongestants can raise blood pressure; tell your doctor if you are hypertensive.

How to store Ocurest AH Eye Drops

Store below 25°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light. Keep the bottle tightly closed and use within 4 weeks of opening.

Expert advice for Ocurest AH Eye Drops

Ocurest AH Eye Drop provides soothing relief from eye irritation due to allergy. It should usually be used twice a day (in the morning and the evening). If your symptoms are particularly severe, your doctor may suggest you use them up to four times a day. Wash your hands first before applying Ocurest AH Eye Drop. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface. If it does, squeeze out two or three drops straightaway onto some tissue and rinse the tip with saltwater. After applying it, close your eyes, and place one finger at the corner of your eye. Apply gentle pressure for 1 to 2 minutes before opening your eyes. This will prevent the medication from draining out. Try not to blink or rub your eye. If you normally wear contact lenses, please wear your spectacles instead until your doctor advises you that it is suitable for you to wear your lenses again.
