Composition of Salbair-B Forte

Salbair-B Forte contains Salbutamol 4 mg + Bromhexine 8 mg tablets (commonly marketed as Salbair-B Forte). It belongs to the Short-acting beta2-agonist (SABA) + Mucolytic agent class of medicines.

How Salbair-B Forte works

Salbutamol is a short-acting beta-2 agonist that relaxes bronchial smooth muscles to open airways and reduce wheeze/breathlessness. Bromhexine is a mucolytic/expectorant that thins and loosens mucus, making it easier to cough out and improving airway clearance.

How to take Salbair-B Forte

Tablet for oral use. Take as prescribed by the doctor, usually 2–3 times daily; can be taken with or without food (take with food if stomach upset occurs). Swallow with water; do not exceed the recommended dose.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause a racing heart, marked tremor, headache and a fall in blood potassium. It can cause vomiting, severe drowsiness, a racing heart and, with codeine, dangerously slow breathing. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Salbair-B Forte are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

Use with caution in heart disease (arrhythmias, ischemic heart disease), hypertension, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, and seizure disorders. May cause tachycardia and tremors; avoid overdose. Seek medical help if breathing worsens, severe palpitations/chest pain occur, or allergic reactions (rash, swelling) appear. Not intended to treat acute severe asthma attack as a rescue inhaler unless advised; follow doctor’s plan. Use caution in pregnancy and breastfeeding; use only if prescribed.

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for anyone with a known allergy to the propellant used in the inhaler. Codeine-containing preparations are not for children, or for anyone with breathing difficulty.

Interactions with other medicines

Beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol) may reduce effect/precipitate bronchospasm, other sympathomimetics increase side effects, MAO inhibitors/tricyclic antidepressants may increase cardiovascular effects, diuretics/corticosteroids/xanthines (theophylline) may increase risk of hypokalemia, digoxin levels may decrease with salbutamol

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.

Keep a spare reliever and check the counter so you are not caught with an empty one. Follow your written asthma action plan if you have one. Do not stop a preventer because you feel better — that is the medicine working. Drink plenty of water — it thins mucus better than any syrup. Steam inhalation helps congestion and costs nothing. Measure the dose with the cup supplied.
