How Sustaglar Pen works

Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose enter cells for energy and reduces glucose production by the liver. This lowers blood sugar levels and helps control diabetes-related symptoms and complications.

How to take Sustaglar Pen

Use only as prescribed. This pen is for subcutaneous injection (under the skin) using a new needle each time; do not inject into a vein or muscle. Rotate injection sites (abdomen/thigh/upper arm). Follow dosing and timing advised by your doctor and monitor blood glucose regularly.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take the missed dose of Sustaglar Pen as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.

If you take too much

Taking more Sustaglar Pen than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.

Side effects of Sustaglar Pen

Most side effects of Sustaglar Pen are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar)
• injection site reactions (pain/redness/swelling)
• weight gain
• itching or rash
• lipodystrophy at injection site

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Risk of hypoglycaemia—carry glucose/sugar and know symptoms (sweating, tremor, confusion). Do not share pen to avoid infection transmission. Use caution in kidney/liver impairment and during illness; dose adjustments may be needed. Do not stop or change dose without medical advice. Seek urgent care for severe allergy (swelling, breathing difficulty) or repeated severe low sugars.

Interactions with other medicines

Other antidiabetics, beta-blockers (may mask hypoglycaemia), corticosteroids, thiazide diuretics, thyroid hormones, sympathomimetics, MAO inhibitors, ACE inhibitors, alcohol (can increase hypoglycaemia risk)

How to store Sustaglar Pen

Store unopened pen in refrigerator (2–8°C); do not freeze. Protect from light. After first use, store as per label (often at room temperature below 25–30°C) and discard after the in-use period; keep cap on when not in use.
