Tercof contains Ambroxol (30mg) + Guaifenesin (15mg) + Menthol (2.5mg) + Terbutaline (1.25mg). It belongs to the Expectorant / mucolytic / bronchodilator and Counter-irritant / topical anti-inflammatory class of medicines.

How Tercof works

Tercof Syrup is a combination of four medicines: Ambroxol, Guaifenesin, Menthol and Terbutaline.

How to take Tercof

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Measure it with a measuring cup and take it by mouth. Shake well before use. Tercof Syrup may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Tercof Syrup, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause vomiting, severe drowsiness, a racing heart and, with codeine, dangerously slow breathing. It is unlikely from skin use, but swallowing these preparations can be serious, particularly in children. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Tercof are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

See a doctor if a cough lasts more than a week, or comes with fever, breathlessness, chest pain or blood in the sputum. Do not give cough and cold preparations to young children except on a doctor's advice. Do not combine two cough preparations — they frequently contain the same ingredients, and the doses add up. Preparations containing codeine can cause dependence and must be used only for the period your doctor specifies. For external use only. Keep it away from the eyes, mouth and broken skin. Do not apply a heating pad or hot water bottle over the treated area — this can cause a burn. Do not bandage tightly over it unless your doctor has told you to. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying, unless your hands are the area being treated. Stop if the skin becomes severely irritated or blisters.

Do not take Tercof if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Codeine-containing preparations are not for children, or for anyone with breathing difficulty. Not for use on broken, infected or badly inflamed skin.

Interactions with other medicines

Sedating ingredients add to the effect of alcohol and sleeping tablets. Decongestants such as phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine can raise blood pressure — tell your doctor if you are hypertensive. Topical anti-inflammatory gels add to the effect of the same medicine taken by mouth; tell your doctor if you use both.

Store below 30°C in the original pack, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

Tercof Syrup relieves cough associated with bronchitis, bronchial asthma, emphysema and other broncho-pulmonary disorders. It may cause dizziness and sleepiness. Do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how it affects you. If you are diabetic, monitor your blood glucose regularly while taking this medicine. Inform your doctor if you have a history of thyroid or heart disease. Stop taking Tercof Syrup and inform your doctor if your cough persists for more than 1 week, tends to recur, or is accompanied by a fever, rash or persistent headache.
