Zonisep 100 contains Zonisamide (100mg). It belongs to the Anticonvulsant (sulfonamide; sodium channel blocker/T-type calcium channel blocker) class of medicines.
Treatment of epilepsy/seizure disorders (as adjunct therapy for partial-onset seizures); may be used for other seizure types as decided by the physician.
Zonisamide is an antiepileptic medicine that helps reduce abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It blocks voltage-gated sodium channels and T-type calcium channels and may enhance inhibitory neurotransmission, thereby lowering seizure frequency.
Take tablet/capsule exactly as prescribed by the doctor, usually once or twice daily. Can be taken with or without food; take at the same time each day and swallow whole with water. Do not stop suddenly; dose is usually titrated and tapered as advised.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
If you miss a dose of Zonisep 100 Capsule, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Taking more Zonisep than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Zonisep are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Prescription-only antiepileptic. Do not stop abruptly (risk of rebound seizures). May cause drowsiness/dizziness—avoid driving/alcohol until you know the effect. Risk of metabolic acidosis, kidney stones, decreased sweating/heat intolerance (especially in hot weather/children), serious skin reactions, and mood changes/suicidal thoughts—seek medical help if symptoms occur. Use caution in kidney or liver disease; ensure adequate hydration. Contains sulfonamide—use caution in sulfa allergy.
Other CNS depressants (benzodiazepines, opioids, alcohol) may increase sedation; carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (topiramate, acetazolamide) increase risk of metabolic acidosis/kidney stones; CYP3A4 inducers (carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, rifampicin) may reduce zonisamide levels; CYP3A4 inhibitors may increase levels.
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
Take your medication regularly as directed by your doctor as missing doses can trigger seizures. Do not change the brand of your medicine and make sure that you have sufficient amount of medicine present with you. Some healthy tips to prevent seizures: Take a healthy diet along with regular exercise. Practice yoga every day. Get enough sleep at nighttime. Limit the use of screen time such as mobile/ laptop. Take your medication on time. Do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how this medicine affects you. Drink plenty of water while taking Zonisep 100 Capsule to reduce the risk of kidney stones and heat stroke. Inform your doctor if you have sudden pain in your stomach, pain on urinating, or if you find blood in your urine. It may cause loss of appetite and weight. Monitor your weight regularly. Inform your doctor if you develop any unusual changes in mood or behavior, new or worsening depression, or suicidal thoughts or behavior. Do not stop taking the medication suddenly without talking to your doctor as it may increase the seizure frequency. Zonisep 100 Capsule is used along with other medicines to help control your seizures. Do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how this medicine affects you. Dress lightly during hot climates or when exercising and check carefully for signs of decreased sweating or heat stroke. Drink plenty of water while taking Zonisep 100 Capsule to reduce the risk of kidney stones and heat stroke. Inform your doctor if you have sudden pain in your stomach, pain on urinating, or if you find blood in your urine. It may cause loss of appetite and weight. Monitor your weight regularly.
