Asthakind Sugar Free Expectorant is a prescription medicine containing Guaifenesin (50mg) + Terbutaline (1.25mg) + Bromhexine (2mg). It is used for productive cough (wet cough) with thick mucus, chest congestion in conditions such as acute, chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma and COPD (as advised by doctor). It belongs to the group of medicines called Beta-2 adrenergic agonist + Mucolytic + Expectorant.
Oral syrup. The dose and how long you take it depend on what you are being treated for and how you respond. Do not take more, or for longer, than your doctor has advised.
The side effects seen most often with Asthakind Sugar Free Expectorant are nausea, vomiting, stomach upset and diarrhoea. Most are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. Tell your doctor if one persists or worries you.
Before you start, tell your doctor about any liver, kidney or heart problem, whether you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, and every other medicine you take, including supplements and ayurvedic preparations. Some of them can change how Asthakind Sugar Free Expectorant works.
Most side effects of Asthakind Sugar Free Expectorant are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. The ones reported most often are:
Stop the medicine and get help at once for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
Oral syrup. Take the dose exactly as prescribed by your doctor; commonly taken 2–3 times daily using a measuring cup/spoon. Can be taken with or without food; taking after food may reduce stomach upset. Drink adequate fluids to help loosen mucus; do not exceed the recommended dose.
Terbutaline is a beta-2 agonist that relaxes airway smooth muscles to relieve bronchospasm and ease breathing. Bromhexine is a mucolytic that thins and loosens thick mucus, while guaiphenesin is an expectorant that helps expel mucus by increasing respiratory tract fluid. Menthol provides a soothing, cooling effect on the throat.
Schedule H medicine—use only on medical advice. Use with caution in heart disease/arrhythmias, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, seizure disorders, and in patients with peptic ulcer. Stop and seek medical help if allergic reactions, severe palpitations/chest pain, worsening breathlessness or persistent cough/fever occur. Not recommended for self-medication in children; dosing should be decided by a doctor. May cause dizziness/tremor—use caution while driving/operating machinery.
If you miss a dose of Asthakind Expectorant Sugar Free, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
An overdose of this medicine can cause vomiting, severe drowsiness, a racing heart and, with codeine, dangerously slow breathing. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.
Beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol) may reduce effect and worsen bronchospasm; other sympathomimetics may increase side effects; MAO inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants may increase cardiovascular effects; diuretics/corticosteroids/xanthines (theophylline) may increase risk of hypokalaemia; digoxin effects may be altered with low potassium; alcohol/sedatives may worsen dizziness
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from direct light. Keep bottle tightly closed. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
