Alprazolam (0.5mg)
Becalm 0.5 Tablet contains Alprazolam (0.5mg) and is used for anxiety, insomnia, panic disorder, seizures and muscle spasm. Prescription required.
Monograph
Becalm 0.5 Tablet is a prescription medicine containing Alprazolam (0.5mg). It is used for anxiety, insomnia, panic disorder, seizures and muscle spasm. It belongs to the group of medicines called Benzodiazepine / sedative-hypnotic.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. The dose and how long you take it depend on what you are being treated for and how you respond. Do not take more, or for longer, than your doctor has advised.
The side effects seen most often with Becalm 0.5 Tablet are drowsiness, dizziness, unsteadiness and poor concentration. Most are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. Tell your doctor if one persists or worries you.
Before you start, tell your doctor about any liver, kidney or heart problem, whether you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, and every other medicine you take, including supplements and ayurvedic preparations. Some of them can change how Becalm 0.5 Tablet works.
Most side effects of Becalm are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. The ones reported most often are:
Stop the medicine and get help at once for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not chew, crush or break it unless your doctor has told you to. Take it at bedtime, or as prescribed. Taking it at about the same time each day helps you remember. Follow the dose and the duration written on your prescription.
Alprazolam calms over-activity in the brain, which relieves anxiety and helps sleep come more easily.
These medicines cause dependence. They are intended for the shortest possible course — usually two to four weeks — and are not a long-term treatment for anxiety or sleeplessness. Never stop a regular course suddenly. Withdrawal can cause severe anxiety, tremor and fits. Your doctor will taper it slowly. Do not drive or operate machinery. Drowsiness and slowed reactions can continue into the next day. Never combine with alcohol or with opioid painkillers — together they can stop your breathing. Older people are far more likely to fall, become confused or have memory problems on these medicines. Several of these are Schedule H1 medicines and must be dispensed against a prescription and entered in the pharmacy register.
Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.
An overdose of this medicine can cause deep unconsciousness and dangerously slow breathing, particularly with alcohol or an opioid. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.
Alcohol, opioids, antihistamines, muscle relaxants and other sedatives all deepen the sedation, sometimes fatally.
Store below 30°C in the original pack, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
