Monograph
D Acne Plus Gel is a prescription medicine containing Allantoin (0.5% w/w) + Clindamycin (1% w/w) + Niacinamide (4% w/w). It is used for acne. It belongs to the group of medicines called Moisturiser / skin barrier repair, Antibacterial agent and B-complex vitamin.
This medicine is for external use only. The dose and how long you take it depend on what you are being treated for and how you respond. Do not take more, or for longer, than your doctor has advised.
The side effects seen most often with D Acne Plus Gel are mild stinging on broken skin, greasy feel, rarely and a rash. Most are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. Tell your doctor if one persists or worries you.
Before you start, tell your doctor about any liver, kidney or heart problem, whether you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, and every other medicine you take, including supplements and ayurvedic preparations. Some of them can change how D Acne Plus Gel works.
Treatment of Acne
Most side effects of D Acne Plus are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. The ones reported most often are:
Stop the medicine and get help at once for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
This medicine is for external use only. Use it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Clean and dry the affected area and apply the gel. Wash your hands after applying, unless hands are the affected area.
D Acne Plus Gel is a combination of three medicines: Allantoin, Clindamycin and Niacinamide which treat pimples (acne). Allantoin is a skin protectant which works as a moisturizer and relieves minor skin irritations. Clindamycin is an antibiotic which works by penetrating into the skin and killing acne-causing bacteria. Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B. It exerts anti-inflammatory effects when applied to the skin and reduces swelling, redness and tenderness associated with acne.
Apply generously and often — several times a day, and always within a few minutes of a bath while the skin is still damp. Some paraffin-based emollients are flammable when they soak into clothing and bedding. Keep away from open flames and cigarettes. Stop if the skin becomes more red, itchy or sore after use. Finish the whole course even after you feel better. Do not drink any alcohol while taking metronidazole, ornidazole or tinidazole, or for the period after the course that your doctor states — the combination causes severe flushing, vomiting and a racing heart. Report severe or watery loose motions during or after the course rather than treating them yourself. Tetracyclines stain developing teeth and are avoided in young children and in pregnancy. Antibiotics do not work against colds, flu or most sore throats, which are caused by viruses. Tingling, numbness or burning in the hands and feet should be assessed by a doctor rather than self-treated — a supplement does not address the cause. Folic acid can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency while nerve damage continues, so B12 should be checked before taking folic acid long term. Bright yellow urine after a B-complex dose is expected and harmless.
If you miss a dose of D Acne Plus Gel, apply it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
An overdose of this medicine is not a realistic risk from a moisturiser used on the skin. It can cause vomiting, severe loose motions and nerve symptoms. It is unlikely to cause serious harm, because the body passes surplus B vitamins out in the urine. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.
Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Close the cap tightly after each use. Keep out of the reach of children.
