Monograph
Divalrate ER 500 is a prescription medicine containing Divalproex (500mg). It is used for epilepsy, seizure disorders (partial, generalized seizures), management of manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder and prevention of migraine headaches (prophylaxis). It belongs to the group of medicines called Anticonvulsant (valproate).
Oral extended-release tablet; swallow whole with water (do not crush/chew/split). The dose and how long you take it depend on what you are being treated for and how you respond. Do not take more, or for longer, than your doctor has advised.
The side effects seen most often with Divalrate ER 500 are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Most are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. Tell your doctor if one persists or worries you.
Before you start, tell your doctor about any liver, kidney or heart problem, whether you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, and every other medicine you take, including supplements and ayurvedic preparations. Some of them can change how Divalrate ER 500 works.
Most side effects of Divalrate ER are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. The ones reported most often are:
Stop the medicine and get help at once for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
Oral extended-release tablet; swallow whole with water (do not crush/chew/split). Take once daily at the same time each day, with or without food (with food if stomach upset). Dose and duration as prescribed; do not stop abruptly.
Divalproex sodium dissociates to valproate in the body. Valproate increases brain GABA levels and modulates sodium and calcium channels, stabilizing neuronal firing and reducing abnormal electrical activity.
Contraindicated in active liver disease or significant hepatic dysfunction; risk of severe hepatotoxicity (especially in first 6 months), pancreatitis, hyperammonemic encephalopathy, thrombocytopenia and bleeding. Monitor liver function tests, CBC/platelets, and ammonia if symptoms occur. Can cause sedation—use caution while driving. Do not stop suddenly due to seizure risk. Use caution in elderly, renal impairment, and in patients with metabolic/urea-cycle disorders.
If you miss a dose of Divalrate 500mg Tablet ER, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
An overdose of this medicine can cause deep unconsciousness, slowed breathing and dangerous heart rhythm disturbance. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.
Carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, lamotrigine (increased rash risk), topiramate (hyperammonemia), aspirin (increases valproate levels/bleeding), warfarin/anticoagulants (bleeding), benzodiazepines and other CNS depressants (added sedation), alcohol (added CNS depression), rifampicin (reduced levels)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.
