High cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia), mixed dyslipidaemia, hypertriglyceridaemia (adjunct), prevention of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) in at-risk patients
Rosuvastatin is a statin that inhibits HMG‑CoA reductase, the key enzyme in cholesterol synthesis in the liver. It lowers LDL (“bad” cholesterol) and triglycerides and can modestly raise HDL, reducing atherosclerotic risk.
Take orally as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow whole with water; continue diet and exercise measures. Do not stop without medical advice.
Headache, dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, muscle pain (myalgia), weakness, increased liver enzymes
Prescription medicine. Risk of muscle injury (myopathy/rhabdomyolysis)—seek care for unexplained muscle pain/weakness especially with fever or dark urine. Monitor liver function; avoid in active liver disease or persistent unexplained transaminase elevations. Use caution in kidney impairment, hypothyroidism, heavy alcohol use, and in elderly. Stop and consult doctor if pregnancy occurs; not recommended during breastfeeding. Inform doctor of any history of muscle disorders or prior statin intolerance.
Cyclosporine (avoid/major increase in levels), gemfibrozil and other fibrates (increased myopathy risk), niacin (increased myopathy risk), protease inhibitors (may increase rosuvastatin exposure), ezetimibe (additive effects/myopathy risk), warfarin (may increase INR—monitor), antacids containing aluminium/magnesium (reduce absorption—separate dosing)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
