Before you take it
Not recommended; consult doctor (avoid especially in pregnancy unless clearly needed)
Use with caution; alcohol can raise triglycerides and increase liver-related side effects—limit/avoid
Monograph
Fenofibrate 150 mg (as Fenofibrate) tablet/capsule
Treatment of high cholesterol and high triglycerides (dyslipidaemia, hypertriglyceridaemia); used to reduce risk of pancreatitis in severe hypertriglyceridaemia; adjunct to diet and lifestyle changes
Fenofibrate activates PPAR-α, increasing lipolysis and clearance of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins. It lowers triglycerides and VLDL, can increase HDL, and improves overall lipid profile.
Oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily; swallow whole with water. Often taken with food (follow brand/doctor advice). Continue diet, exercise and weight control while on therapy.
Stomach pain, nausea, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, elevated liver enzymes, muscle pain/weakness, rash
Not for use in severe kidney disease, active liver disease, gallbladder disease, or known hypersensitivity. Risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis increases with statins, in elderly, diabetes, hypothyroidism, or renal impairment—report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness. Monitor liver function and kidney function periodically. May increase risk of gallstones; stop if pancreatitis is suspected. Dose adjustment/avoid in renal impairment.
Statins (increased myopathy risk), Warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding—monitor INR), Cyclosporine/tacrolimus (renal risk), Bile acid sequestrants like cholestyramine/colestipol (reduced absorption—separate dosing), Colchicine (myopathy risk)
