Bacterial infections such as acute otitis media (ear infection), pharyngitis/tonsillitis, acute bronchitis and exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, and enteric fever (typhoid) where susceptible organisms are likely
How It Works
Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death. It is effective only against susceptible bacteria, not viruses.
Directions for Use
For oral use after reconstitution. Add boiled and cooled water up to the mark on the bottle and shake well; allow to stand briefly, then shake again. Measure dose with a calibrated spoon/cup; can be taken with or without food (take with food if stomach upset). Shake well before each dose and complete the full course as prescribed.
Use only for bacterial infections; do not stop early. Avoid if allergic to cefixime/cephalosporins; use caution with history of severe penicillin allergy. Use with caution in kidney disease (dose adjustment may be needed) and in patients with history of colitis/antibiotic-associated diarrhoea; seek care for severe/persistent diarrhoea. Prolonged use may cause superinfection (e.g., oral/vaginal thrush).
