How It Works
Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It kills bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis.
Directions for Use
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily or in two divided doses; may be taken with or without food (take with food if stomach upset occurs). Swallow with water and complete the full course; do not skip doses.
Prescription-only antibiotic; use only for bacterial infections. Complete the course to prevent resistance. Use with caution in patients with history of penicillin/cephalosporin allergy (risk of hypersensitivity). May cause antibiotic-associated diarrhea; seek medical help for severe/persistent diarrhea (possible C. difficile). Dose adjustment may be needed in renal impairment. Use caution in pregnancy and breastfeeding; use only if prescribed by a doctor.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin/other anticoagulants (may increase bleeding risk/INR), probenecid (may increase cefixime levels), live oral typhoid vaccine (reduced vaccine efficacy), other nephrotoxic drugs (caution in renal impairment)
