Antibiotics

Antibiotics are prescription medicines used to treat bacterial infections. They do not work against viral infections like the common cold or flu. Using antibiotics correctly is critical for effective treatment and preventing antibiotic resistance.

Common antibiotic classes include penicillins (amoxicillin), macrolides (azithromycin), fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin), cephalosporins (cefixime, ceftriaxone), and tetracyclines (doxycycline). Each class targets different types of bacteria.

Always complete the full prescribed course of antibiotics even if you feel better. Stopping early can allow resistant bacteria to survive and multiply. Never share antibiotics or use leftover antibiotics from a previous illness without medical advice.
