How Acamprol Tablet works

Acamprosate modulates neurotransmission in the brain by reducing glutamatergic hyperexcitability and helping restore the balance between excitatory (glutamate) and inhibitory (GABA) pathways disrupted by chronic alcohol use. This reduces post-withdrawal cravings and discomfort, supporting continued abstinence.

How to take Acamprol Tablet

Use as prescribed by a doctor. Typically started after alcohol detoxification/when abstinent. Tablets are swallowed whole with water; can be taken with or without food (taking with meals may improve tolerance). Do not crush/chew unless advised. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney impairment.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of acAMproL Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

Taking more Acamprol than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.

Most side effects of Acamprol are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Interactions with other medicines

No major clinically significant interactions are common; however inform your doctor if taking naltrexone, disulfiram, antidepressants, antipsychotics, sedatives, or other CNS-acting medicines. Additive gastrointestinal effects may occur with drugs causing diarrhea.
