Composition of Alevo 500 mg Tablet

Alevo 500 mg Tablet contains Levofloxacin 500 mg (as levofloxacin hemihydrate) tablet. It belongs to the Fluoroquinolone antibiotic class of medicines.

Uses of Alevo 500 mg Tablet

• Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as community-acquired pneumonia
• acute bacterial sinusitis
• acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
• urinary tract infections (including complicated UTI and pyelonephritis)
• prostatitis
• and certain skin/soft tissue infections (as prescribed).

How Alevo 500 mg Tablet works

Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. This blocks DNA replication and repair, leading to bacterial death.

How to take Alevo 500 mg Tablet

Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, usually once daily. Can be taken with or without food; take with water and at the same time each day. Avoid taking with antacids, iron, zinc, sucralfate, or calcium-containing products within 2 hours before/after the dose.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause kidney injury, fits and heart rhythm disturbance. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Alevo 500 mg Tablet

Most side effects of Alevo are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• nausea
• diarrhoea
• headache
• dizziness
• abdominal pain
• insomnia
• vomiting

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Prescription-only antibiotic; use only for bacterial infections and complete the full course. May cause tendonitis/tendon rupture (higher risk in elderly, steroid use), peripheral neuropathy, CNS effects (seizures, confusion), worsening myasthenia gravis, QT prolongation/arrhythmias, severe allergic reactions, severe diarrhoea (C. difficile), blood sugar disturbances (hypo/hyperglycaemia), photosensitivity, and liver injury. Use with caution in kidney disease (dose adjustment may be needed), heart rhythm disorders, epilepsy, and in elderly. Avoid unnecessary sun exposure; stop and seek medical help for tendon pain, numbness/tingling, severe rash, or palpitations.

Do not take Alevo if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Generally avoided in children and adolescents, in pregnancy, and in anyone with a history of tendon problems with these antibiotics.

Interactions with other medicines

antacids/aluminium-magnesium, sucralfate, iron salts, zinc, calcium (reduced absorption), warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk), antidiabetic medicines/insulin (glucose disturbances), corticosteroids (increased tendon rupture risk), QT-prolonging drugs e.g. amiodarone/sotalol/macrolides/antipsychotics (arrhythmia risk), NSAIDs (increased CNS stimulation/seizure risk), theophylline (CNS effects)

How to store Alevo 500 mg Tablet

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original strip and out of reach of children.

Drink plenty of water through the course. Separate it from antacids, milk and mineral supplements.
