Composition of Amicostar Tablet

Amicostar Tablet contains Amitriptyline (10mg) + Methylcobalamin (1500mcg). It belongs to the Antidepressant and B-complex vitamin class of medicines.

How Amicostar Tablet works

Amitriptyline and methylcobalamin. Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant which increases the levels of chemical messengers (serotonin and noradrenaline) that stop the movement of pain signals in the brain. Methylcobalamin is a form of vitamin B which helps in the production of myelin, a substance that protects nerve fibres and rejuvenates damaged nerve cells. Together, they relieve neuropathic pain (pain from damaged nerves).

How to take Amicostar Tablet

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Amicostar 10mg/1500mcg Tablet may be taken with or without food.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Amicostar 10mg/1500mcg Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause fits, dangerous heart rhythm disturbance and coma, and is particularly dangerous with the older tricyclic medicines. It is unlikely to cause serious harm, because the body passes surplus B vitamins out in the urine. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Amicostar Tablet

Most side effects of Amicostar are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

These medicines take two to four weeks to begin working, and longer for the full effect. Stopping at two weeks because nothing has changed is the commonest mistake. Never stop suddenly. Abrupt withdrawal causes dizziness, electric-shock sensations, irritability and flu-like symptoms — your doctor will reduce the dose gradually. Tell your doctor or go to hospital immediately if thoughts of harming yourself appear or worsen, particularly in the first weeks or after a dose change, and especially in anyone under twenty-five. Seek urgent care for agitation with fever, shivering, a racing heart, muscle twitching or confusion, particularly if more than one medicine affecting serotonin is being taken. Side effects are usually worst in the first fortnight and then settle. Tingling, numbness or burning in the hands and feet should be assessed by a doctor rather than self-treated — a supplement does not address the cause. Folic acid can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency while nerve damage continues, so B12 should be checked before taking folic acid long term. Bright yellow urine after a B-complex dose is expected and harmless.

Do not take Amicostar if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Must not be combined with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, or started within the gap your doctor specifies after one.

Interactions with other medicines

Tramadol, triptans for migraine, linezolid, St John's wort and other antidepressants can together raise serotonin dangerously. Anti-inflammatory painkillers and blood thinners increase the bleeding risk when combined with this group. Long-term metformin, acid-reducing medicines and some anti-epileptics lower B12 or folate levels. Tell your doctor if you take levodopa, as vitamin B6 can reduce its effect.

Store below 30°C in the original pack, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

Amicostar 10mg/1500mcg Tablet is used to treat certain types of long-lasting pain caused by damage to nerves. It may ease the pain within a few days but it may take 2-3 weeks before you see maximum benefit. Inform your doctor if you are taking any other pain relieving medicines. Along with taking this medicine, your doctor might advise you to undergo physiotherapy to get relief from pain. Amicostar 10mg/1500mcg Tablet might cause dry mouth. Frequent sips of water may help ease the discomfort.
