Ceftum 500 mg Tablet contains Cefuroxime (500mg). It belongs to the Second-generation cephalosporin class of medicines.

How Ceftum 500 mg Tablet works

Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to bacterial cell death. It is effective only against bacterial infections, not viral illnesses.

How to take Ceftum 500 mg Tablet

Oral tablet; take exactly as prescribed. Usually taken with food to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset; swallow whole with water. Complete the full course even if you feel better; do not skip doses.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Ceftum 500mg Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause vomiting, severe loose motions and, rarely, fits. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Ceftum are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Nausea
• diarrhoea
• abdominal pain
• vomiting
• headache
• dizziness
• rash
• candidiasis (thrush)
• increased liver enzymes

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Use only for bacterial infections. Inform doctor if you have allergy to cephalosporins/penicillins or history of severe allergy. Use with caution in kidney disease (dose adjustment may be needed). Diarrhoea can be a sign of antibiotic-associated colitis (seek medical help if severe/watery/bloody). Prolonged use may cause superinfection (fungal/other bacteria).

Interactions with other medicines

Probenecid (increases cefuroxime levels), warfarin/other anticoagulants (may increase bleeding risk/INR), antacids/H2 blockers/PPIs (may reduce absorption), oral contraceptives (may reduce effectiveness—use backup contraception), aminoglycosides or potent diuretics like furosemide (increased risk of kidney effects)

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from moisture and light. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.

Complete the full course of Ceftum 500mg Tablet exactly as prescribed, even if you start feeling better. Stopping Ceftum 500mg Tablet early may allow the infection to return and become harder to treat. Diarrhea may occur while taking Ceftum 500mg Tablet; stay hydrated and consult your doctor if it becomes severe or persistent. Drink plenty of fluids if diarrhea occurs and watch for signs of dehydration. Stop taking Ceftum 500mg Tablet and seek immediate medical help if you develop a rash, itching, swelling of the face or mouth, or difficulty breathing. Inform your doctor if you have previously had allergic reactions to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics. Consult your doctor if symptoms do not improve within a few days of starting treatment. Report severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting, or signs of dehydration to your doctor promptly. Notify your doctor if you develop symptoms such as itching or discharge that may indicate a yeast infection after antibiotic use.
