Metformin may rarely cause lactic acidosis—seek urgent care for fast breathing, severe weakness, abdominal pain, or unusual sleepiness; higher risk with kidney disease, dehydration, severe infection, heart/liver failure. Use caution/avoid in significant renal impairment; kidney function should be assessed before and during therapy. Stop temporarily before major surgery or iodinated contrast procedures as advised. Use caution in elderly, malnourished, and those with adrenal/pituitary insufficiency. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for type 1 diabetes or for diabetic ketoacidosis. Not for people with severe kidney or liver disease. Not for people with severe kidney disease, severe liver disease, or an acute illness causing dehydration. Not for people who have had diabetic ketoacidosis.
