Composition of Desowen Cream

Desowen Cream contains Desonide (0.05% w/w). It belongs to the Low-potency topical corticosteroid (glucocorticoid) class of medicines.

How Desowen Cream works

Desonide is a low-potency topical corticosteroid. It reduces skin inflammation by suppressing release of inflammatory mediators, thereby decreasing redness, swelling and itching.

How to take Desowen Cream

For topical use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected area 1–2 times daily or as directed by a doctor; rub in gently. Use the smallest amount for the shortest duration; avoid use on broken skin unless prescribed. Wash hands after application; avoid contact with eyes, mouth and mucosa. Do not cover with occlusive dressings unless advised.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Desowen Cream, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not apply extra to make up for a missed dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can suppress the body's own steroid production when it is used for a long time over large areas, especially in children. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Desowen Cream

Most side effects of Desowen are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• dryness
• irritation
• redness
• folliculitis
• acneiform eruptions
• skin thinning (atrophy)
• striae
• telangiectasia
• hypopigmentation

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Safety advice for Desowen Cream

Warnings and precautions

Use only on affected areas; prolonged or excessive use may cause skin atrophy and systemic corticosteroid effects (especially in children, on large areas, or under occlusion). Avoid use on untreated bacterial, fungal or viral skin infections (e.g., herpes, chickenpox) unless appropriate anti-infective therapy is given. Do not use for acne, rosacea or perioral dermatitis unless advised. Avoid application on face/groin/axillae for long periods. Consult doctor if no improvement within 1–2 weeks or if irritation/worsening occurs.

Do not take Desowen if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for untreated bacterial, fungal or viral skin infections. Not for use in or around the eyes.

Interactions with other medicines

No significant interactions expected with topical use; increased risk of systemic effects with other corticosteroids or with occlusive dressings/large-area application. Discuss use with other topical medicines on same area.

How to store Desowen Cream

Store below 25°C. Protect from heat and direct light. Do not freeze. Keep cap tightly closed and out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Desowen Cream

Desowen Cream is used to treat the redness, swelling, itching, and discomfort of various skin conditions. It should be applied to the affected areas as a thin film two or three times daily, or as advised by your doctor. Don't use it more often or for longer than advised by your doctor. Don't cover the area being treated with airtight dressings such as bandages unless directed by a doctor, as this may increase the risk of side effects. If you think the area of skin you are treating has become infected you should stop using Desowen Cream and consult your doctor. Consult your doctor if your skin condition has not improved after four weeks of treatment. Do not use it for more than 4 consecutive weeks at a time.
